LAHORE: A centralised incineration system would be set up for disposing of harmful waste of hospitals of the city and for this purpose, incinerator of Children Hospital would be operated according to its full capacity. This was decided in a meeting chaired by Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Secretary Najam Ahmed Shah on Thursday. Children Hospital Medical Director Prof Dr Ahsan Waheed Rathore, Health Department Procurement Specialist Tayyib Farid, officers of the department and the engineers also attended the meeting. The meeting was informed that at present, incinerator of Children Hospital is disposing of 500 kg hospital waste whereas it has a capacity to incinerate 200 kg waste per hour. Shah directed the engineers of concerned firm to make arrangements to run the incinerator at full capacity. He directed that repair and maintenance work of the incinerator should immediately be completed so it could be operational according to its capacity with a view to dispose of harmful waste of other hospitals of Lahore. Shah directed the officials to adopt a foolproof checking and monitoring system for the collection and disposing of hospitals waste also be formulated according to the SOPs of hospitals waste management. He said that pilferage of hospital waste should be strictly monitored. Shah said that initially, Lahore General Hospital would be taken on board for hospital waste management and gradually other hospitals would also be taken in the centralized system of incineration. The health secretary said that option to outsource the process of collection of hospitals waste from the different hospitals and its transportation to the incinerator of Children Hospital would also be considered.
