LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) Justice Ayesha A Malik on Wednesday fixed September 12 as hearing date of a petition requesting investigation against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members in the Panama leaks case. The judge earlier had ordered to consolidate all petitions on the issue while hearing an application of Munir Ahmad, a local resident. Petitioner counsel Muhammad Azhar Siddique requested the court to direct the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) take action under section 18 of the NAB Ordinance. He stressed that the petitions regarding Panama leaks were pending for long and should be heard and decided at the earliest. He submitted that that during the hearing of main case on May 18, the court had issued notice to the NAB but nobody appeared, which shows the lack of apathy on part of the bureau. He said NAB committed a grave crime by not acting in accordance with law as directed in Articles 4 and 5 of the Constitution. He also submitted that the PM had no immunity for criminal proceedings in view of article 248 of the Constitution, adding that the NAB chairman illegally favoured the PM by not starting inquiry against him under the NAB Ordinance. He said that the case filed by the applicant was not directly linked for disqualification of PM but for investigation under the NAB law, so this case may be separated from other cases and may be decided on its own merit. He requested that the NAB should be directed to probe into the offshore companies owned by PM and his family members. In the main petition, the counsel had submitted that the matter was of sensitive nature and needs to be investigated without any delay, as allegations of establishing offshore companies brought a bad name to the country. He said that thorough and early investigation of the matter was in the national interest.
