LAHORE: Federal Ombudsman Salman Farooqui Sunday said that the ombudsman office was dispensing immediate justice in the country. Talking to the Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) programme ‘Meet the Editors’, he said that neither fee was being received nor counsel or advocate was being hired to seek justice in the institution. He said that a common citizen could file an application to get his/her complaints addressed. “We would provide him justice at his doorstep.” Highlighting the performance of his department, Salman Farooqui said: “The office has fixed time of 60 days to address complaints of citizens, 45 days for review appeal and 90 days for appeal to the president of Pakistan.” “We have addressed over 300,000 complaints during 36 months and in 2016 some 94,000 complaints were addressed which is a record in 34 year history of the department”, he added. He said that ratio of appeal to the president against the verdict of ombudsman had remained less than 1% while the president of Pakistan had upheld the verdicts of ombudsman in almost 90% appeals. “In 2014, all the complaints were resolved within the period of 60 days and the cases which were pending for the last several years were implemented.” Salman Farooqui added that during the year 2015 all the complaints were resolved within 45 days and now not a single complaint was pending so far. He said that in 2016, a programme was introduced under which officials of Federal Ombudsman are dispensing justice in almost 33 districts and 511 tehsils of the country at the doorstep of people. “To resolve the complaints of overseas Pakistanis, complaint commissioner have been appointed along with the establishment of one-window at all international airports where their complaints are being addressed in 45 days”, he added. He said a facilitation desk had been set up at the office of Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry to resolve complaints regarding trade and industry. “A programme has been launched for the welfare of juvenile whose parents cannot pay the fine,” he said, adding that Sweet Homes had been established for children of prisoner women so that their children could continue the education. Salman Farooqui said that a contact would be set up between the CPNE and the Federal Ombudsman to highlight the performance of ombudsman and to make public relations more effective.
