LAHORE: Sweets production units in the province were on Wednesday given 48 hours to make arrangements for quality control at their premises. Afterwards, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) will start a crackdown on those failing to maintain standards including use of approved ingredients. In the directive issued yesterday, the PFA said that best quality milk and other dairy products like khoya, made from thickened milk, sugar, and vegetable colours should be used in making sweets. It also asked businesses concerned to only use dairy products in their ingredients and to refrain from using products containing vegetable fats. PFA DG Noorul Ameen said that substandard food colours were a major cause of several serious diseases including cancer. He said action against those businesses not maintaining standards was needed in view of the expected rise in sale of sweets ahead of Eid. Published in Daily Times, June 22nd, 2017.
