LAHORE: The Emergency Ward of the Services Hospital on Tuesday was shut down after a clash between Young Doctors Association (YDA) and anti-corruption officials on Monday night. Patients were the ultimate sufferers due to the closure of the Emergency Ward of the hospital and outdoor patient departments of hospitals across the province. Patients and their relatives, who had come from far flung area of the province, were of the view that the government and the Health Department had failed to provide best medical facilities to the poor patients. Talking to the media, YDA Information Secretary Dr Salman claimed, “It was actually an effort to abduct Dr Atif, Dr Sultan and Dr Salman as we presented our stance to apply the policy of one patient in one bed. There is nothing wrong in it as it will ensure health of patients. Around 70% of operations are going unsuccessful just because of the hospital acquired infections, which is transferred from patient to patient lying together in a single bed. The government has once again started pressurising us against our demand which is not at all illegal.” He added, “Unidentified armed men, who introduced themselves as the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) officials, tried to abduct us. When we resisted, they manhandled us. Dr Atif is still in serious condition. His eye was operated upon and he had to undergo a CT scan following a head injury.” He mentioned that the car in which they [ACE officials] came was robbed in 2004. “Guns and wine bottles were recovered from the car.” Dr Salman demanded the health minister to resign and threatened to prolong closure of emergencies wards and OPDs of hospitals. Earlier, a spokesman for the YDA claimed that the anti-corruption officials tortured YDA Vice President Dr Atif. He added that the YDA had shut down the emergency ward in a protest after the incident. The young doctors have also blamed that the anti-corruption officials were carrying no arrest warrants or any identity card with them. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the ACE said that there many cases had been registered against Dr Atif and Dr Salman under the Anti-Corruption Act and that they had gone to the hospital to perform their duty.
