LAHORE: A two-month cleanliness drive to make the metropolitan city garbage-free will start tomorrow (Wednesday). The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting on solid waste management issues held at the Town Hall on Monday. Lahore Mayor Mubashar Javaid chaired the meeting. Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) Managing Director (MD) Bilal Mustafa Syed, deputy mayors, representatives of Ozpak, Albarak and other officials concerned attended the meeting. According to details, nine special squads have been constituted for the purpose. Each squad consists of 30 employees. The drive will be carried out on a daily basis in nine union councils (UCs) selected on the recommendations of deputy mayors. The mayor has directed deputy mayors (DMs) and UCs chairmen to monitor the cleanliness drive and involve other elected persons in it. Speaking on the occasion, Mubashar Javaid said, “The aim of all cleanliness campaign is to make Lahore clean for which elected representatives including deputy mayors,chairmen, councillors and others have been asked to cooperate.” He said it was the vision of Punjab CM to make Lahore garbage-free. Moreover, the Solid Waste Management managing director briefed deputy mayors about the functionality of Ozpak, LWMC and Albarak and declared appreciated the cleanliness agencies for keeping the city clean. At the end, Mubashar Javaid thanked the representatives of LWMC, Ozpak and Albarak and assured them of cooperation in this regard. According to an estimate, more than 5,700 tonnes of waste is produced on a daily basis in Lahore, which is removed from different areas of the city by the LWMC. Although, this figure comes from the areas which are under jurisdiction of the LWMC.
