LAHORE: Traditional prayers and holy mass marked the commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ as members of Christian community celebrate Easter across the city on Sunday. The day also marked the end of weeks of fasting. Prayers were also offered for unity, brotherhood, harmony, prosperity and sovereignty of the country. Hymns and special rituals were also offered by Christians. The main prayer services were held at the Lahore Cathedral and Sacred Heart Cathedral. Members of the community exchange greetings and gifts with their relatives and friends. Prayers and processions were held at churches across the city on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Foolproof security arrangements were taken by police and law enforcement agencies to avoid any untoward incident. Police contingents were deployed at all important churches and people were allowed to enter into church premises after complete checking through metal detectors and walk-through gates. Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Muhammad Amin Wains also visited several churches of the city to check security arrangements. The Lahore Waste Management Company ensured cleanliness arrangements around the churches on the eve of Easter. LWMC Managing Director (MD) Bilal Mustafa Syed said that Christian employees of the company had been given Rs 1,500 each on their special day. “We have declared April 17 a holiday for our Christian employees,” he said, adding: “Honest and hardworking Christian workers of the LWMC are our precious assets, and the company was taking all possible measures for their welfare and betterment.” Scores of Christian families also thronged recreational places, including Lahore Zoo, Gulshan Park, Jilani Park, Bagh-e-Jinnah, Fortress Stadium and Lahore Fort, etc, to mark the day. Meanwhile, the Punjab CM has said that all minorities in Pakistan are enjoying equal rights and the government has taken concrete measures for their welfare. In his message to Christian community on Easter Sunday, he said that Easter is the name of spending time with deserving people. He said that the Christian community was playing its due role in country’s progress. He said the constitution of Pakistan guarantees equal rights, and complete protection to all minorities.
