LAHORE: A day after the deadly attack at Charing Cross, a number of Lahoris, including students, Tuesday cancelled Valentine’s Day celebrations to mourn the blast victims. They were of the view that had cancelled the celebrations to show solidarity with the families of martyrs. “There is no issue in cancelling the celebrations for the people who lost their lives in the deadly attack. We can celebrate the day next year but no one can bring back the loved ones of the people who died in the attack,” they said. Talking to Daily Times, Lahoris condemned the sad incident and said that they can celebrate any other day for their loved ones. Wasif, 22, a student, who had planned a barbeque party with his family and friends, cancelled his party and added: “After I came to know about the sad news, I decided to cancel the party and asked my friends and family that we will organise the party on any other day.” Yasir, albeit, presented roses to his family members, saying: “Presenting roses to family members was just a message that they are important for me and I love them all.” Zakia, 32, mother of three said, “Sharing the grief of those who lost their loved ones is more important than celebrating the Valentine’s Day.” She said that every year she used to exchange gifts, chocolates with her husband, but this year they decided not to exchange gifts as “human life is more important than anything else”. A similar response was also received by shopkeepers who were selling gift items, flowers and balloons. Some of them also stopped selling these items to show solidarity with families of victims of the blast. They said it would be unethical to celebrate the Valentine’s Day when many people had been left in pain and agony following the blast on Monday. On Monday, a suicide bomber blew himself up at Charing Cross killing at least 16 people and injuring scores of others. Banned outfit Jamat-ul-Ahrar had claimed responsibility for the attack. The blast occurred in the protest being held by pharmacists and chemists against amendments to the drug act. The blast occurred a day before the Valentine’s Day which has always drawn mixed reaction from the people. It might be mentioned that the Islamabad High Court had banned the Valentine’s Day celebrations on public places.
