LAHORE: A report forwarded to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has revealed that 2,281 students have obtained laptops using bogus ID cards, while 1,771 students have received two laptops each. The report held the Higher Education Commission (HEC) additional secretary among nine officials responsible for unfair distribution of laptops among students under the chief minister’s laptop scheme. The report said that at least 1,771 students somehow received two laptops each, which cost over Rs 60 million to the government’s treasury. It said that around 2,481 students had filed bogus identity cards to obtain laptops. Meanwhile, the chief minister has formed a committee to probe the irregularities. Punjab Additional Chief Secretary Shumail Ahmed Khawaja will head the committee. The scheme was launched by the chief minister to provide laptops to students on the basis of merit.
