ISLAMABAD: The Senate’s Sub-Committee on Climate Change on Tuesday sought a report from climate change and petroleum ministries in a week on construction of LNG terminal near Bundal Island, Karachi. Senator Samina Abid chaired the meeting of the committee. The members discussed a call attention notice jointly moved by PPP Senators Taj Haider, Sherry Rehman and Karim Khawaja to highlight potential environmental and security risks due to construction of a LNG terminal at Bundal Island. Briefing the committee, representatives of the Petroleum Ministry said the ministry has not yet received any application for no-objection certificate to construct the LNG terminal near the island. Taj Haider informed the committee that LNG terminal already exists in Gwadar and it should be linked with Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline. Samina Abid, Sherry Rehman and Taj Haider showed their concern and resentment and said the petroleum minister was saying one thing and the ministry’s representatives were saying another thing. The body suggested that all relevant ministries and Port Qasim Authority submit their reports within a week. They were also asked to mention whether the environmental impact assessment was done or not. Senator Rehman said the committee should be informed in the next meeting if any department, organisation or province was not cooperating with the ministries. On 23 August, Port Qasim Authority representative Shabir Ahmad Khan told the committee that no terminal was being constructed near Bundal Island. A terminal had already been completed far away from the island, he had said.
