NEW DELHI: India has asked an official of Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi to leave the country within 48 hours. It is pertinent to mention here that he was detained in the Indian capital by Delhi Police on the allegations of espionage. According to Indian media, 35-year-old Mehmood Akhtar was detained in Indian capital by Delhi Police on charges of espionage and was accused of possessing highly classified army-related documents. The staffer was questioned by the Inter State Cell of Crime Branch. Later, he was released. Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit over the detention. Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar informed Basit that the Pakistan mission staffer has been declared persona non grata. Spokesperson of Indian Ministry of External Affairs Vikas Swarap said in a tweet said, “FS summons Pak High Commissioner to convey that Pakistan High Commission staffer has been declared persona non grata for espionage activities”.
