PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to shut down government schools with less than 50 enrolled students. Upper Dir and Swat’s district education officers have issued notifications in this regard urging headmasters of the government schools to expedite their efforts to increase students’ strength in their schools within one month – otherwise the facilities will be closed down, reported a private news channel. The headmasters were further told to start door-to-door campaigns in their respective areas with the help of parents-teachers council and local elders to enrol maximum number of kids. According to an official of the education department, the schools with student strength less than 50 will be closed and added that the teachers and students will be accommodated in nearby schools. Official informed that the decision to close schools having less than 50 students is part of the rationalisation policy which is being implemented to minimise government expenses.
