LOS ANGELES: Moonlight won the Oscar for best picture after La La Land was initially incorrectly named as the winner. Presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty announced La La Land as the winner of the biggest award, when they were handed the previous winner’s envelope, containing a card saying “Emma Stone, La La Land”, resulting in the error. The La La Land team was in the middle of their speech when the mistake was discovered. Beatty said a moment later that he had opened the envelope and read a card which said “Emma Stone and La La Land.” He was confused and paused because of it, he said. “I wasn’t trying to be funny,” Beatty explained. Director of Moonlight Barry Jenkins took to the stage in stunned amazement. He said. “Very clearly, even in my dreams this could not be true,” Jenkins said. “But to hell with dreams, I’m done with it, cause this is true. Oh my goodness.”
