‘We found love’ singer Rihanna has an accolade coming her way for commitment to charity. According to sources, Harvard University will be honouring Rihanna with the Peter J Gomes Humanitarian award on campus for being the ‘Humanitarian of the year.’ Harvard Foundation’s director S Allen Counter informed media of Rihanna’s charitable contributions, stating, “Rihanna has charitably built a state-of-the-art center for oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown. She has also created the Clara Lionel Foundation Scholarship Program [named for her grandmother and grandfather] for students attending college in the U.S. from Caribbean countries, and supports the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen Project, a multiyear campaign that will provide children with access to education in over 60 developing countries, giving priority to girls and those affected by lack of access to education in the world today. For most the fans, this comes as a shock because Rihanna’s has had the ‘party girl’ repute but her contributions for education are exemplary. The 29-year-old singer founded the ‘Clara Lionel Foundation’ in 2012, which aims at improving needy communities worldwide. “Diamonds” singer had been on a mission, on the behalf of her organization and Global Citizen organization, to promote education in Malawi. Harvard’s ‘Humanitarian of the Year Award is given to ‘high spirited leaders’ in the honour of late Rev. Professor Peter J Gomes. Previously, Kofi Annan, Ban Ki-moon and Malala Yousafzai have been honoured with such an achievement. Rihanna will be receiving her Humanitarian Award at Harvard Sander’s Theatre on February 28.
