The movie everyone seems to be talking about is Damien Chazelle’s La La Land. The film is expected to win numerous Oscars, having already taken home seven Golden Globe Awards. La La Land isn’t just the best ‘made for screen’ musical to reach theaters in a very long time, it’s the closest any movie has come in recent years to recreating the look and feel of classic Hollywood celluloid. We live in a cynical world and Damien Chazelle’s mesmerizing romantic musical is just what you need to lighten up the dark days. The film is a beautiful blend of old and new. The Director brought back the twirling and soaring kind of musical which was missing from the cinema for a long time now. Chazelle beautifully combines modern 21st century technology with classic 20th century style. When the film’s central couple comes together the film completely hits its stride, as Gosling and Stone light up the screen, reaching incredible heights. The lead actor Sebastian is a virtuoso jazz pianist, who doesn’t crave fame but rather wants to restore a renowned jazz club in L.A. to its former glory. Mia, a role that is played remarkably by Emma Stone, is an aspiring actress who works at a coffee shop in a movie studio, hoping to land a role she could play. The two artists are drawn together by their mutual affection and simultaneously pulled apart by the success they find. Both these two have a great chemistry which is evident from the three movies they have done in the past. They make a couple you want to believe in and root for. La La land is a lovely movie for dreamers, lovers and anyone who needs a bit of cheering. The space between dreams and reality of La La Land is so perfect. It’s a love story directed to swoon you away.
