Fashion as activism might seem to be en vogue right now in the wake of an overtly political year. Fashion as a powerful tool to make their voices heard and their political opinions known. Never has that been more apparent than in New York this fashion week. We turn our attention to designers who have used their clothes to shine a spotlight on important issues. PRABAL GURUNG His fall collection made a bold statement: Models, including Bella Hadid and plus-size women Candice Huffine and Marquita Pring, shed the tailored, colorful outerwear and separates from the collection and marched down the catwalk in tees bearing feminist phrases such as “The Future is Female,” “Voices for Choices” and “We Will Not Be Silenced. Jonathan Simkhai The designer disturbed “Feminist AF” tees at his runway show. And walked out proud wearing the tee to take a final bow. The Council of Fashion Designers of America The CFDA announced plans to partner with Planned Parenthood just prior to fashion week, hoping to use the spotlight on NYFW to raise awareness and funds. Calvin Klein Attendees of the Calvin Klein show were given a ‘unity’ bandanas, much like the ones worn at the Tommy Hilfiger show in California by models including Gigi Hadid. Public School Creative Directors Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne poked fun at Donald Trump‘s campaign with hats and tees that read “Make America New York” and “We Need Leaders.” Models walked down the runway to the song “This Land Is Your Land.”
