Sir: Religious minorities in India have been suffering at the hands of the Hindu majority of India for a long time. The Indian government often ignores its constitutional commitments to protect the rights of minority communities including the Muslims. Violence and discrimination against Muslims and other minorities such as Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists etc. lead to social injustice and inequality; but the Indian government fails to realise the damage it is doing. In such a scenario the situation in Indian held Kashmir which has a Muslim majority cannot be expected to be rectified. The people of Kashmir have been fighting for their rights for a long time but India and the rest of the world have disregarded them. They have become disenfranchised and marginalised but no one seems to care. Pakistan has long raised its voice in solidarity with the Kashmiris of Indian held Kashmir and has urged the world community to play a positive role in finding a lasting solution to the Kashmir issue. But unless India realises its responsibility towards its minority communities all attempts to do so will fail. NIDA YASEEN Via Email
