Sir: Watching televisions talk shows lately has become mental torture for the viewers. Once it used to be a good pastime to watch talk shows after 8:00 pm on various channels but now there appears to be no code of conduct, and the anchorpersons also do not have any control over the discussion. At times, all the panel members speak simultaneously and it becomes a free for all battle of words. This sight is most obnoxious to the viewers. It is not known what the criterion is of calling members onto the panel. We see the same faces of political leaders and the so-called specialists. Some of the party leaders, who are in power at the centre or in the provinces, who defend their party’s doings, make a mockery of themselves as nothing is going right in the country. I suggest to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) that it should lay down a code of conduct wherein no one should be allowed to partake in character assassination of anybody else and that no foul language be allowed. The anchorperson should ensure that only one person at a time speaks and others are allowed to give their points of view when it is their turn. The heads of political parties should nominate only the elected representatives and avoid sending lady parliamentarians who are only nominated on the reserved seats. The performances by some of them are revolting and disgusting. The anchorpersons are also advised to invite a common man or a man from the street who is the most hard-hit person in the poor governance of the present setup. The affectee of any legislation or a policy is a common man but he is never seen on these talk shows. ALMASUR REHMAN SHAFI Karachi
