Sir: According to a media report, the Regional Standing Committee of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) wants the agriculture sector to be one of the beneficiaries of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This would open up Chinese and other Central Asian markets for Pakistan’s agricultural produce such as oranges, dates, mangoes, guava, banana, green chilly, tomatoes, and cauliflower. It also merits mention that CPEC is a unique opportunity to fix Pakistan’s problems in the infrastructure and energy sector as well. Attaining food security remains a big challenge for government and agriculture should be included in the CPEC priority list. In view of the above, it is need of the hour that government may take measures overcoming the problems of farmers and exporters as well. Also, the Planning Commission should devise thorough business plans so that the CPEC can open new doors of cooperation in the agriculture sector, which would help in transfer of technology pertaining to agro-chemicals, pesticides, seeds and fertilisers.
