Sir: I want to draw the attention of the authorities concerned to the problem of haphazard traffic in Karachi, the biggest city of the country. In Karachi, drivers act carelessly and do not drive safely. They are fond of overtaking and over-speeding; they do not even care about zebra crossings. The public buses remain overloaded, and about four to five passengers are always seen hanging on the footboard. Despite the presence of a large number of passengers, bus drivers always drive in a disorganised manner that shows their callousness towards fellow human beings. Secondly, one of the most important reasons for road accidents is violation of traffic signals. Neither do drivers care to follow the rules, nor are the traffic police officials able to stop these violations. As a result, accidents are becoming more common in Karachi. To cope with this distressing situation, traffic police should be kept on duty all the time. Buses should not be overloaded and those bus drivers who drive recklessly should be fined and punished. I hope that these requests may be considered by the concerned authorities as soon as possible. NAJIA MARYEM Karachi
