Sir: Abdul Sattar Edhi, who devoted his entire life to the service of humanity, didn’t forget to serve even after his death as he donated his eyes after death. This speaks volumes of his selflessness and love for the humanity. However, in Pakistan, the culture of organ donation is not as widespread as in other parts of the world. The example of Abdul Sattar Edhi could prove to be an example for the people of Pakistan. This will not only improve the organ donation culture but will also help thousands of people waiting for donors in different medical cases. Approximately 50,000 people die every year in Pakistan due to end stay organ failures. Many lives could be saved if people pledged to donate their healthy body organs at the time of their deaths. Unfortunately, our cultural barriers and misunderstanding prevent such acts from developing. Lack of relevant education has also been an obstacle to people choosing to donate their organs. There is a need to educate the masses on the issue. Media, as well as politicians and other public personalities, should start a campaign for educating the masses on the benefits of organ donations.
