Sir: Given the current trend of administrative blindness to working conditions on various business premises, especially in small and medium-run enterprises, the incidents of non-compliance with safety precautions and laws are not new for us. Industrialists, whether owning small or large enterprises, want their business interests accomplished even at the cost of the lives of poor workers, and, owners do not hesitate to exploit their workers who toil in deplorable conditions. Surprisingly, there is an internationally accepted standard that children below the age of 18 should not be engaged in any employment activity, but the law is openly violated in Pakistan. The government should take measures for ensuring better working conditions at workplaces. MUHAMMAD BILAL SARWAR Sialkot
