Sir: Egypt is a country known for its harsh and arid climate, primarily because of the fact that the area is for the most part located in the Sahara desert. One would never imagine the brown, sandy grounds covered in white. Scientists and weather reporters claimed it could never snow in regions like Vietnam, Laos and Egypt. However, these scientists were in for a surprise this winter. After 112 years, the burning skies in Egypt were filled with white frozen balls of snow that settled down on the sands. Many Egyptians were witnessing snow for the first time in their lives and were amazed. The meteorology involved in this phenomenon suggested that somehow the earth’s magnetic fields had shifted but children and families in Egypt cared little for what caused their region to experience snow; it was the experience of a lifetime. This was phenomenal and magnificent but also a difficulty for areas not prepared to expect snow. Without the proper machinery and excavation technology as well as cold bearing immune systems, it is somewhat disastrous for a hot region to experience snow. Many of us wish for snow in Karachi but what would really happen if we did? WARISHA NAJAM Karachi
