Sir: It is quite inexplicable situation that Sindh government deliberates at eleventh hour about extension of policing powers of Rangers in the province. Undoubtedly, Rangers have played an unprecedented and commendable role in eliminating terrorism, target killing, cases of extortion and violence and restored peace and normalcy in Karachi. Sindh government must be grateful that Rangers improved law and order situation and assisted in clean up of the province especially Karachi, which was descending into chaos and lawless. It is also a fact that Sindh government has appreciated and applauded the sincere efforts and diligence of Rangers at different forums but ironically now they also need extra time for consultation and deliberation about the extension of Rangers’ powers. This delay not only causes sense of uncertainty, insecurity and consternation among the people of Karachi but also develops rancour between Rangers and government. Moreover this situation will also embolden terrorist elements if Rangers’ operation in Karachi comes to a halt. This scenario is clearly reflecting the incompetency and vacillation of Sindh government and this dilemma might affect national action plan as well. It is quite obvious now that all these elements who are involved in the nexus between terrorism and corruption have nowhere to hide and they have been exposed. It is the need of the hour that Sindh government must consolidate national action plan without any prejudiced intentions by extending policing powers and Rangers operation should not become a vehicle for any political ambition. As safe and peaceful Karachi is the road towards strengthened economy, prosperity and progress. IMRAN ALI PHULL Karachi
