Sir: This letter is about the International Ranking of the universities and the poor performance of Pakistan’s universities. Times Higher Education has exposed the work of Higher Education Commission Pakistan by issuing its world ranking. The ranking show that Pakistan has been exhibiting deterioration in education in recent years and all claims of HEC seem to be questionable. It is in a state of severe woes and is going through an expulsion as all funds issued to universities for research, infrastructure development and capacity building of faculty members are being wasted. This is confirmed by the fact that Pakistan’s universities have fallen in world ranking except Quaid-i-Azam University. The recent world rankings have brought humiliation for the nation and HEC. The world is moving ahead in education whereas Pakistan is showing incompetence in the field. Those who claim ownership of Pakistan should notice the development of their next-door neighbors in education. The government of Pakistan should strictly review the policy and implementation mechanism of HEC and be vigilant. Since I am a student and belong to Sindh, it’s a shame and quite disappointing that not a single university from Sindh is placed in the rankings. Most of the universities just produce degree- holders and don’t make multidimensional, knowledgeable scholars. The recent rankings should be taken seriously and the government as well as HEC should work to bring the house in order. NAVEED MUSTAFA CHANDIO Jamshoro Published in Daily Times, September 22nd 2017.
