Sir: In the aftermath of the tragic Peshawar incident, the government has restored capital punishment so that culprits who have committed heinous crimes can be executed and made an example of. Without being attached to anti- or pro-capital punishment arguments, one cannot help saying that this is going to be considered a step in the right direction if it is to ensure rule of law in our society. A mere restoration of certain modes of punishment and invoking certain laws can never guarantee eradication of crimes. Our circumstances call for complete rule of law because it is the only way of ridding our society of crimes and terrorism. A society with no rule of law breeds crime and illegal activities. The terrorism that we have been facing for more than one decade would never have gone to such an extreme if rule of law had been ensured and enforced in our society. PERVEZ AHMED Hyderabad
