Sir: The International White Cane Safety Day, observed worldwide on the 15th of October, attempts to create awareness about the potential problems and requirements of visually handicapped persons, along with celebrating their achievements. These people require societal protection, and the government of Punjab is committed to address their challenges. A number of projects have been initiated for education, vocational training, job placement and ultimate rehabilitation of blind persons to make them contributing members of society and self-reliant citizens of Pakistan. While whatever has been done is commendable, but more needs to be done in order to give them an opportunity to live as equal citizens. It is hoped that all segments of society including philanthropists and concerned government departments would join hands to address the problems of visually handicapped people with concrete projects. Mere words will not be enough unless they are followed by action. SYED ALI QASIM Lahore
