Sir: Self-assumed civil or military titles earn VIP treatment in courts while violating rules almost everywhere. Al-Haaj or Haji, Chaudhri and Sardar are other most used titles for affluent citizens who could not go to a military academy. Have a cursory look at the National Database Registration Authority’s (NADRA’s) records; you will see them full of names with such titles. Criminals go scot-free by exploiting such lacunae. Self-assumed titles falsify identities and have vitiated NADRA’s database. The authorities should accept birth-record names only as valid identities. Some birth records in rural areas use castes. The practice should be abolished altogether. AMJED JAVED Rawalpindi Cantt
