Sir: Punjab Chief Minister, Shahbaz Sharif, seems determined to eliminate child labour from brick kilns. This initiative should be appreciated. Early this year, the government of Punjab had launched a mega campaign to eliminate child labour from brick kilns by providing free education and medical facilities to children and their parents on top of a monthly stipend of Rs. 1000 to school going children. The recently-passed Punjab Prohibition of Child Labour at Brick Kilns bill stipulated that no brick kiln owner would be allowed to employ, engage or permit a child aged below 14 years at his brick kiln. This bill also set down a minimum six-month imprisonment and fines up to Rs. 500,000 for all those caught employing children. According to this bill, kiln owners and parents or guardians of children would be held equally responsible for their employment at kilns. This bill acts as a ray of hope reflecting a bright future for all under-privileged children. The Government of Punjab should be appreciated for taking every possible step to increase enrolment in schools so that our nation can produce a greater number of heroes tomorrow. WAJEEHA AHMAD Lahore
