Sir: Autumn is a second spring when every leaf becomes a flower but our attitude towards autumn is very unnatural while autumn is a natural phenomenon and a part of our ecosystem. Autumn is a time for harvesting a number of crops. The beauty of autumn is highly praised by the poets of every culture and society since long. Whether it is the city of Parachinar or Peshawar, we all are eyewitness to a daily very non-friendly environmental act conducted by the municipality employees that is the burning of fallen autumn leaves, which they collect from the streets and elsewhere. The burning may intensify the smog that co-incidentally, occurs in the period of autumn months and on the other hand, we also waste very effective, cheap soil enhancer and natural fertilizer. If the dead tree leaves are treated positively, provide nutrients to the soil as well as shelter for animals. If we cannot treat dead leaves in a proper way called composting then simply bury it under the ground and again, after passing through the stages of natural decomposition, it will prove a good natural fertilizer. The severity of smog, fog or haze intensified by smoke, exhaust emissions, or other atmospheric pollutants can be minimised, provided we stop this very unnatural action of burning the dried leaves.
