Sir: Because of new political crises, some important issues have disappeared from the public discourse, such as the local bodies elections. It is rather surprising that Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the politically beleaguered provinces, have shown seriousness in this regard with the former actually conducting the elections. Punjab and Sindh being relatively stable and better off have been putting off the elections on one pretext or another. The Supreme Court has instructed the rest of the provinces to hold the elections by November 15. However, the stance of these provinces belie their intention. Visibly big ticket projects such as motorways, flyovers and metro buses figure more important in the overall planning of the government then local bodies elections. Why do the governments that talk incessantly about saving democracy, especially the PPP and PML-N, consider the local bodies elections unimportant to solve the people’s grievances at the grassroots level?
