Sir: This is in response to the news that the Punjab University’s (PU) faculty is wary and critical of government policy to establish private sector institutes for accreditation. It is ironic that private institutes, which are in their infancy stages, are trying to dominate or rather degrade prestigious institutes like PU under the guise of accreditation. How can a consortium of private entities be allowed to gauge the performance of public sector institutions that already have verified achievements and records? Public academic institutions like Punjab University provide the maximum possible facilities to their students at minimum possible cost and their teaching standards are far better than private universities under similar circumstances. The government should not be trapped by the agenda of the private education mafia, which itself is in dire need of scrutiny and regulation because of their vague admissions policies, student-teacher ratio, meritocracy issues, etc. Public sector institutions like PU and others have thorough policies and procedures regarding admission and the course contents being taught at different departments are at par with academic institutions around the world. Putting Punjab University, an institution with a proven academic reputation across the globe, under the scrutiny of a so-called accreditation council is disgraceful. SAUD BIN AHSEN Lahore
