Sir: Throughout the world, International Day for Midwives is observed on May 5 each year. With every 260 mothers out of 100,000 passing away due to maternal causes, midwives are the real need of the hour. Those women who survive labour have to suffer from various infections, allergies or even disabilities. We lose as many as three women each hour due to pregnancy-related complications in Pakistan. These circumstances can be amended by creating awareness amongst the general masses about the important role these midwives play in our society. This should encourage funding for midwives from the government too. I myself have lost an aunt when she was struggling during pregnancy. Therefore, speaking from my own experience, I believe the trend of midwives should be reintroduced with improvements and better medical facilities so as to ensure safe deliveries, even at home.ALIZE ANEESKarachi
