Sir: The live hate speech of a certain political leader on April 10 has caused agitation amongst the general public and government alike. Fourteen television channels were issued show-cause notices by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) for having telecast that speech live. The body has assured the government that it will take action under Section 27 of the PEMRA Act.I am in favour of this step since hate speech is not covered by what the press calls “freedom of speech”. It is a bunch of derisive remarks meant solely to instil restlessness in the public and to incite prejudicial behaviour, even violence! Politicians are our authoritative leaders and their job is to promote harmony in the nation, not what our ‘exemplary’ leaders are doing these days. Instead of the ongoing debate over who won the elections fairly, it would do us all good if they, for once, stop bickering over their personal benefits and unite for a mutual purpose: to serve their people sincerely.ALIZA ANEESKarachi
