Sir: Visiting the Lahore Book Fair is indeed a feast for book readers and lovers but one thing which is noticeable — in fact distressing — is that most of the people who have gathered there were not for book shopping but took this event more as a recreation spot for eating and outing purposes and forgetting its actual motive, which is to revive the culture of reading, especially in the younger generation. Following the media coverage of this event, it will certainly make you feel optimistic that a book culture is fast reviving but the actual position appears to be a bit odd when you visit the place personally. I myself visited the book fair yesterday and saw people taking pictures of their own in order to mark their presence at the event and later showing them to their social (media) circles. No doubt avid book readers can also be seen there, which is quite encouraging, but many people, especially younger ones, can easily be figured out taking dozens of selfies through their smart gadgets but not daring to go through a page or two of any book from a bookstall.
