Sir: This is with reference to the increasing surge of used car imports in Pakistan in recent years. Pakistan is said to have imported 53,609 used vehicles in the fiscal year 2015-16, whereas it imported 32,160 used cars in the financial year 2014-15. Pakistan is one of the top 40 automobile producing countries of the world and has a well-developed automobile industry in place. However, it appears that with the increasing rate of used car imports into the country, the government is not interested in supporting its local car manufacturing industry. This sector has been performing below its actual potential owing to the rise of used cars coming into the Pakistan market. The automobile industry in any country is supposed to be an engine of growth, but in Pakistan it seems to have been left helpless, causing great losses to the investors and costing hundreds of thousands of jobs. In fact, the menace of used cars is depriving the country of its largest industry. ZOHAIB UDDIN Karachi
