Sir: China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) should be appreciated as a rather ambitious infrastructural development project under which China aims to connect Gwadar port to China’s northwestern autonomous region of Xinjiang via a network of highways, railways and pipelines. This would help transport oil and gas. It also includes the construction of power plants in Gwadar, which would generate 4500 MW of electric power. The overall construction costs are estimated at $46 Billion for the entire project, which is expected to be completed in several years. Pakistan views the economic corridor as a game changer for its economic development. It would generate huge revenues for government, boost private sectors and industry, build world-class infrastructure, attract foreign direct investment, minimise the electricity deficiency to zero, supply the required quantities of oil and gas through the proposed pipelines as well as help create better opportunities for the country’s employment. The CPEC is believed to generate around 700,000 new jobs in Pakistan, which would further help bring our young generation to the mainstream. It should also be realised, however, that this project would save thousands of kilometres of transit between China and other countries. As it would be much easier for China to ship the products manufactured in its industries to the rest of the world. Nevertheless, I still believe that at least in view of Pakistan’s current crises, the CPEC would help revitalise its crippling economy. If everything goes according to the plan, the CPEC would definitely help evolve Gwadar into a phenomenal structure with fewer taxes, an exponential economic output, decreased unemployment, fewer security concerns, empowered military, higher GDP, a greater inflow of forex and strengthened relations between Pakistan and China. Thus, Pakistan is critically dependent on the CPEC and cannot afford to loose the venture in any case of failures by the governmental machinery, state functionaries, special agencies, media, or even military. All entities should unanimously support and focus on guaranteeing the success of this China-Pakistan economic corridor for the betterment and welfare of the economy of Pakistan.
