PESHAWAR: Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali Khan on Saturday called for amending Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution.
He was talking to reporters at the Bilour House after an advisory board meeting of his party. The meeting was attended by Ghulam Ahmed Bilour, Afrasiab Khattak, Amir Haider Khan Hoti, Bashir Matta, Latif Afridi and Iftikhar Hussain.
Asfandyar said the party would accept the decision of the country's top court, notwithstanding their reservations over its verdict to remove the prime minister. "I implore all the political parties not to give the power and authority vested in the parliament to the judiciary," he added. "Our party tried its level best to amend the articles, however, PM Nawaz, who was the biggest hurdle in our way, is now suffering the most from them." The ANP chief reiterated that no one could fulfill the qualifications implied in the articles. Before General Ziaul Haq's amendments, there was no ambiguity in Articles 62 and 63, hence there could be no misuse of the articles against political opponents.
"We don't want to challenge the authority of SC and our party adopted a neutral position since the Panama episode began," he remarked.
"This is propelling us to an extremely sad state of affairs where there will only be kings' party and no honourable politicians," he added. "Only yes men will be allowed to rule while dissenters will be brought under 62 and 63."
