PESHAWAR: A strong windstorm and heavy downpour left at least 12 people dead and several injured in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said that two people were killed in Abbottabad and Haripur each and three were critically injured in rain-related incidents in Haripur. According to the Upper Dir deputy commissioner, three children drowned in the River Wari. One of these children was rescued in a critical condition, while two were still missing. The windstorm brought down trees, billboards, electricity cables, boundary walls and roofs of gas stations in different areas of the province. Power supply to 30 per cent of the areas of the province remained suspended after the heavy rain and strong windstorm. The local meteorological office said that winds were blowing at the speed of 55 kilometres per hour in most part of the province. Rainwater submerged roads and streets and many low lying areas. The PDMA had already issued a rain alert and directed district administrations and line departments to be vigilant and ready to deal with any emergency situation. Bilal Faizi, spokesperson for the Rescue 1122 Emergency Service, told Daily Times that nobody was injured or killed in any rain-related incident in Peshawar. Five children and a woman were among those killed. Two children were killed and two others injured in land sliding in Abbottabad. A woman was killed in an incident of roof collapse in Battagram. At least seven people were killed and 13 injured in a road accident in Upper Dir. According to the police, a passenger vehicle plunged into a deep ravine in the Jandari area in Thall police precincts due to a slippery road. Rescue teams rushed to the scene and retrieved bodies and the injured. The passenger vehicle was going from Shireen Ghar to Lamoti in Dir when it plunged into a ravine. The injured were shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Upper Dir. According to the meteorological office, 90 mm rain was recorded at Kakul, 44 mm at Malam Jabba, 21 mm at Risalpur, 19 mm at Cherat, 18 mm at Pattan, 12 mm at Kohat, 10 mm at Peshawar, 9 mm at Saidu Sharif, 8 mm at Balakot and Dir and 5 mm at Parachinar. Weather remained partly cloudy in most parts of the region during the last 24 hours. The meteorological office has forecast widespread rain in Abbottabad, Haripur, Mansehra, Kohistan, Battagram, Torghar, Buner, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Shangla, Swat and Mohmand and Bajaur Agencies in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). There is scattered rain forecast for Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Chitral, Kohat, Hangu, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan and Tank districts and Kurram, Khyber, Orakzai, North Waziristan and South Waziristan agencies in the next 48 hours.
