PESHAWAR: The First Safe Blood Center was inaugurated in Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) on Saturday to provide safe blood transfusion to all hospitals of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). In the opening ceremony of the Center, Project Director Professor Dr Muhammad Tahir Khan said that the project was completed in five year with the support of KFW a German donor organization with the cost of Rs 190 million. He said that it was the first center of Pakistan where the well equipped laboratories and modern technologies with trained staff will work on the blood and will provide it to the hospitals. He further said that regional blood centers will provide Red Blood Cells, Plasma and Platelets and the center will separate components to provide the required blood to the hospitals. He was of the view that the centre will carry out around 480 different tests of blood including Hepatitis, B & C and HIV to secure the patients from different diseases. The unsafe blood transfusion is major cause of diseases like Hepatitis, HIV etc. Dr Tahir Khan said that the Blood Center has only volunteer donors and only donation of blood will be accepted in the center and the blood will not be provided to the individuals but will be provided to the hospitals. He added that two mobile vehicles will visit different universities and colleges to collect blood donation and the center will also create awareness of blood donation in students to save lives. He said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government will soon establish such centers in D. I. Khan, Swat and Abbottabad.
