Coordinator EOC Akbar Khan said that first phase of the IPV campaign was successful and hoped that next two phases that are planned in March and April in southern districts of the province will also achieve its target and play a decisive role in polio eradication. He said that health experts suggest that IPV together with OPV is ideal combination for polio eradication which is why special IPV campaigns have been planned in phase manner in high risk districts of the province. Acting District Health Officer Peshawar Dr Ayub Roze when approached by this scribe shared that IPV, when administered in conjunction with OPV, has been found to boost immunity better than administering OPV alone. He said that inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) has been included into routine immunization schedules which are a critical step to strengthen routine immunization and achieve a lasting polio-free world. Polio eradication and endgame strategic Plan 2013-2018 has laid down some goals including detection and interruption of poliovirus transmission, strengthening of immunization system, introduction of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), and certification of interruption of transmission, he informed. He said that IPV is very safe whether given alone or in combination with other vaccines. It protects children against all three strains of poliovirus, and when used together with OPV, it can boost immunity.
