MARDAN: The lawyers from Mardan District Bar Council have threatened of a strong agitation against the provincial government over the non-payment of compensation money to September 2 Mardan court blast victims and the fragile security arrangements for the lawyers community in the district. The legal fraternity on Saturday boycotted court proceedings as a protest against the non-provision of compensation amount to the legal heirs of the September 2 suicide bomb blast victims and demanded tightening security measurements for the district courts of Mardan. The decision was reached at a meeting among the office bearers of Mardan District Bar Association which was chaired by its President Advocate Ameer Hussain. The lawyers’ body demanded Rs 200,000 as a compensatory money package for each of the family members of the four lawyers who were killed in the deadly attack. Besides, they also announced to give Rs 60,000 to each of the injured lawyers for their treatment. The lawyers also accused the provincial government’s negative attitude towards the victim’s lawyers and injured members and urged the provincial government to manage the compensatory package. The General Secretary of the bar association Asif Iqbal advocate, told Daily Times that the Bar had taken one day’s token boycott in favour of their demand. He said that if the government failed to meet their demands effectively the district court of Mardan would not be allowed to open for legal proceedings and the gate would be locked for tentatively. He said the lawyers along with family members of the martyred and injured would carry out strong agitation outside the Khyber Pakhtukhwa Assembly to endorse their stance. “The lawyers will not compromise on the issue of security and will not turn their eyes blind toward the fragile security arrangements in the city for lawyers and civilians” he added. It is pertinent to mention here that 14 people including four lawyers were killed and more than 20 were injured as the result of a suicide blast at district Mardan court on September 2.
