PESHAWAR: Regional Manager of Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPRC), Jehanzeb Khan on Thursday said they had initiated a drive to develop pressure on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to pass bill pertaining to Child Protection and Welfare Act 2014 from assembly and also to implement it. He said this while talking to media men at Peshawar on eve of launching a campaign for welfare and prosperity of children in the province. Jehanzeb Khan said the draft prepared in 2014 was not presented in KP assembly and that government did not pass the above mentioned bill in last few years in best interest of working children. Jehanzeb further said that around 15,000 children are involved in child labor in provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while 8 ,000 are street children. In order to eradicate children labor and increasing number of street children in KP, he suggested the provincial government should implement 25-A in its true spirit in all districts. The implementation mechanism across the province should be strengthened, he remarked. He clearly said that out of school children are faced with numerous threats and challenges in society and vulnerable to different sorts of harassment and torture including child labor, sexual abuse, drug addiction, early marriages protection and others. Regional Manager opines the provision of free education and implementation of laws for instant elimination of child labor and bringing out of school children to education institutions. Regarding the out of school children, he informed that As many as 2.6 million children are still out of schools in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa out of around 25 million across the Pakistan. However, at least 7000 children are out of schools in Haripur and Abbotabad districts of KP where his organization interventions are in full swing, he added. A total of 500 children were reunified with parents last year who had fled away from their homes in various areas, he claimed. He stresses provincial government to pass on Child Protection and Welfare Bill 2014 from KP assembly and take prompt steps for its implementation as well. In order to provide children free education, the government should also put into effect the 25-A article of constitution of Pakistan which ensures free education, he added.
