PESHAWAR: The strike of teachers of University of Peshawar (UOP) and supported by Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) has entered into its fifth day but still there were no signs of any negotiations between the provincial government and PUTA. The office bearers of PUTA on Saturday maintained that their protest against the proposed model universities statues will continue for tentative period of time. The teachers of University of Peshawar (UoP) have gone to strike on September 26. Dr Jamil Chitrali, President PUTA informed Daily Times that a meeting of the executive body of the university teachers will be held on coming Monday and there were no chances to call off the teachers strike. Around 50 departments and seven constituent colleges of the university remained closed for five days and still the issue could prolong as the teachers have stopped taking classes. Meanwhile, PUTA rejected the model statutes and termed it a blatant attack on the autonomy of the universities, saying it will never be accepted. In a statement, Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) provincial President Dr Abdul Shakoor said that framing the statutes was the responsibility of the statutory bodies of the universities — syndicate and senate. He urged Governor KP Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, who is also the chancellor of the universities to take notice of the issue and resolve it immediately otherwise the protest would spread to other universities in the province. PUTA protest camp hold outside the Teachers Community Centre, which was visited by a large number of teaching faculty members, academicians, politicians and representatives of other communities. Awami National Party (ANP) general secretary Mian Iftikhar Hussain also visited the protest camp and expressed sympathies with the teachers. He said that legislation of PTI government was limited only to files. He alleged that provincial government was passing legislation in haste without consulting the stakeholders. The teachers said that they would not call off their strike until all their demands were accepted by the government. Special Assistant to CM on Higher Education Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani took notice of the teachers’ boycott and convened a meeting of vice-chancellors on October 3 to review Universities Amendment Act, 2016. The meeting would be held at Civil Secretariat to review and discuss the grievances of some universities about the law. UoP VC Dr Rasool Jan, VC Benazir Bhutto Women University Dr Razia Sultana, VC Islamia College University Prof Dr Habeeb Ahmad, VC University of Engineering and Technology Imtiaz Gillani and VCAgricultural University Dr Zahoor Swati have been invited to attend the meeting. Mushtaq Ghani also directed Dr. Rasool Jan to ensure resumption of classes immediately, saying no one would be allowed to impede educational activities at higher education institutions. Students who had left for their homes due teaching faculty staff protest waiting eagerly to resume their classes and has urged the vice chancellor to resolve the issue and save their precious time.
