ISLAMABAD: The ongoing rift between Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan over the report of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) regarding NA-110 ballots has further deepened. Sources claimed that both the senior leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have a lot of reservations over NADRA’s report that was prepared in the supervision of Deputy Chairman Muzaffar Bhatti, who is likely to become the new NADRA chairman. According to the NADRA report, the Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) numbers printed on 293 counterfoils were not readable, but the members concerned verified the same with their serial numbers. It is important to mention here that this report has been prepared in the absence of NADRA Chairman Usman Mobin Yousaf by the officer who was first appointed as the acting chairman and later the deputy chairman of NADRA on the directives of the interior minister. According to the report, 60,000 votes were declared as unidentified. Khawaja Asif had secured 92,484 votes, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Usman Dar bagged 71,573 votes in the previous election. Usman Dar filed a petition against Khawaja Asif’s victory, stating that the election was rigged. The counsel for Khawaja Asif did not appear before the court, on which the court – while expressing annoyance – adjourned the hearing for a week. It is pertinent to mention here that the interior minister and the defence minister are not on speaking terms with each other, and some PML-N leaders are of the view that the defence minister’s membership of the National Assembly is in danger. Sources said that Muzaffar Bhatti’s role would be prominent in the upcoming election, and he could prove to be “dangerous” for not just the PTI and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), but also for the PML-N. They said that it is not difficult to transfer voters – to other constituencies – from the constituencies of candidates disliked by the interior minister. So PML-N leaders believe that blue-eyed candidates of the interior minister would emerge as powerful candidates in the upcoming election. Sources also pointed at the differences between Chaudhry Nisar and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. They said that although the Pakistan Muslim League would win the upcoming election, it was not clear whether it would be the “Nawaz league” that the “Nisar league”.
