ISLAMABAD: The Senate of Pakistan has assumed its role of providing policy guidelines to the government for adopting a robust strategy in the latest situation developing between India and Pakistan. An in-camera meeting of the Committee of the House was held today in the Parliament House under the Chairmanship of Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, Chairman Senate of Pakistan to seek a briefing from the government on the rapidly deteriorating relations between India and Pakistan. Previously, the House referred the matter of Indus Water Treaty to the Standing Committee on Water for submitting its report to the Committee of Whole constituted to “prepare policy guidelines in the light of emerging regional realities” by Monday. Today’s meeting was attended by all parliamentary parties present in the Senate. During the course of in-camera briefings, Khawaja Asif, Minister for Defence along with the Defence Secretary and Sartaj Aziz, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, briefed the Committee on the latest situation between India and Pakistan and steps being taken by the Government in this regard. The briefings were followed by an extensive questions and answers session. The Committee took serious note of grave human rights violations in the Indian Occupied Kashmir and recent incidents of LOC violations committed by India. After detailed and extensive deliberations, the Chairman Senate constituted a Drafting Committee, comprising of the following Senators to prepare draft policy guidelines and bring the same before the Committee by Monday: Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, Senator Sherry Rehman, Senator Sirajul Haq, Senator Col (R) Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi, Senator Dr. Jahanzeb Jamaldini, Senator Ilyas Ahmad Bilour, Senator Lt. Gen. (R) Abdul Qayyum, Senator Nuzhat Sadiq, Nauman Wazir Khattak, Farhatullah Babar, Lt. General (R) Salahuddin Tirmizi, Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah and Senator Muhammad Mohsin Khan. The next meeting of the committee will be held on Tuesday, the 4th October, 2016, to finalise the policy guidelines.
