ISLAMABAD: Former president and leader of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari on Sunday strongly denied reports about his meeting with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazal ur Rehman in London last week. In a press statement issued by the PPP media cell, Zardari, who has arrived in Dubai from London without the much-expected meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, stated that PPP had already decided to pursue the Panama leaks issue to its logical conclusion. The former president said that media reports regarding an ‘understanding; with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on the issue of Panama leaks were ‘false, untrue and baseless’. “A parliamentary committee has already been set up which is engaged in drawing up the terms of reference for investigation into Panama leaks and how to proceed in the matter and there is no question of ignoring it,” the statement added. The former president said that his party has arrived at a well-considered stance on the issue after due deliberations not only within the party but also with all other political parties. “Media reports calculated to give any impression that I may have a different stance on the issue are untrue and baseless and seem motivated to create confusion,” he maintained. Zardari not only contradicted these reports but also stated categorically that the party had already decided to pursue the Panama leaks issue to its logical conclusion. Earlier, it was reported that JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman met with Asif Ali Zardari in London and suggested him to have a meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to hammer out consensus with the government on controversial issues, especially the situation arising out of revelations by the Panama Papers. Zardari, however, had reportedly told Fazl that any negotiation in this regard could take place only if the ‘revengeful attitude’ towards Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in Sindh was disbanded forthwith. “It was PPP which always respected the Charter of Democracy but PML-N, just to gain political advantage, disrespected it,” he had said.
