ISLAMABAD: Accessibi-lity Centres (E-learning) for visually impaired students are being set up at 44 regional offices of the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) across the country. This was stated by the Vice Chancellor University of Baluchistan, Prof. Dr. Javed Iqbal here on Wednesday. Visiting the first-ever centre for this purpose, established at the university’s central library, he said these centres would serve as models for other educational institutions. He further said that it reflected the AIOU’s focus on the education of the deprived and marginalised sections of the society. It is the most impressive initiative taken by the university’s vice chancellor for the welfare of special students, he added. Dr. Javed Iqbal was accompanied by students from six Balochistan universities, who also visited various other departments of the AIOU including the Institute of Education Technology, the gymnasium and the press and publication unit. They appreciated the university’s rich academic strength and infrastructure network. They noted that the AIOU with 1.3 million students and 44 regional offices which included seven in Balochistan were doing a commendable job in promoting literacy and higher education through the academic various programmes. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui, while briefing the students highlighted the university’s achievements in the education sector since its establishment in 1974 said it embarked upon some new initiatives to spread quality educational in every nook and corner of the country. They, he added, were specially focusing on less-developed and remote regions including those in Balochistan. He announced that the AIOU would soon enter into an agreement with seven universities of the province to share their academic strength and educational experience. AIOU sets Sept 30 last date for admissions: Admissions from Matric to Ph.D level programmes for the Semester Autumn, 2015 of the AIOU will be closed on Friday (Sept. 30) Admission forms and prospectuses can be obtained from the university’s main campus, 44 regional campuses and more than 100 coordinating offices across the country. The same can also be downloaded from the university’s official website. The university has also made an arrangement for online admissions. The facility has also been provided at the doorsteps of the students, as the admission forms along with the required fee, can be submitted at the nationwide branches of designated banks.
