ISLAMABAD: After receiving reports from the intelligence and law enforcement agencies, the federal government has started mulling legal steps over to ban the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), including using Article 17A of the constitution against the party, sources said. Sources told Daily Times that the federal government has formed a legal committee headed by the attorney general of Pakistan (AGP), with home secretaries of the four provinces and the federal law secretary as its members. This legal team will review the speeches of MQM founding leader Altaf Hussain and suggest action against the party in the current scenario. This legal committee will also reconsider the present laws to remove hurdles in implementing the National Action Plan (NAP) in a better way, sources said. Sources said that under Article 17A, the federal government has the powers to move a reference in the Supreme Court (SC) against any anti-state political party to ban it.
