ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) organised a colourful event at Lake View Park to observe the Earth Day 2016 under the theme ‘Tree for the Earth’. The event was participated by CDA Member Environment Sanaullah Aman, senior officers of the authority, a large number of students of various educational institutions, representatives of civil society, environmentalists and people from different walks of life. Comprising of a theme-based painting competition among students of different schools, poster competition, debate competition and an awareness walk was also organised during the event. While speaking on the occasion, the CDA member environment said that the ‘Earth Day’ is more than just a celebration of our commitment to the planet; it sends a collective call for action to change climate change. He said that the purpose of Earth Day is to align all efforts aimed to protect and preserve planet earth for our future generations. He further said that on the directions of CDA Chairman Maroof Afzal, the environment wing is focusing on modern techniques to further improve the environment of the capital city. He said that during the recent tree plantation drive CDA has planted 4,50000 plant saplings in different areas of the capital city and special arrangements have been made to ensure the proper growth of planted saplings. He said that the CDA has also planted olive plants at the green belt along the Kashmir Highway. He said that on the special directions of the CDA Chairman Maroof Afzal, green belts and median strips, entry and exit points of the city are being decorated with colourful flowers. A debate competition was won by the students of Assas Foundation Schools, poster competition by the students of Imperial School System while students of Roots School System (RSS) leaded in the painting completion. The CDA member environment distributed prizes among the position holders.
